How to become a Security Officer in the state of Florida:

You can get all your training credentials and qualifications before you are hired by a security company.  Getting these
credentials ahead of time will make you far more attractive to a hiring company.

To be a Security Officer (SO) in the State of Florida, the SO must have what is called a "D" license.  To be a SO who
carries a firearm as a part of his or her job as an SO, the SO must have a valid "D" and "G" license.

Although it is not required, every SO should have a Florida Concealed Weapons License as well to avoid any legal
problems that may arise from transporting duty weapons either by foot or vehicle while on or off duty.  The training
required for the "G" license also qualifies the person for a Florida Concealed Weapons License.
($42finger prints+$75 license
fee=$117.00 Total, valid for 7 years. $65.00 renewal. If "D", "G", and Concealed Weapons licenses are applied for all at the same time, you only need to pay the$42.00  finger print fee once!)

Every SO must first complete their 40 hour "D" license training so that they may apply for their "D" License from the a
state licensed instructor.  This class is typically sponsored by the hiring security agency once the agency has decided
to hire you. The agency typically utilizes an in-house instructor.  The fees for the 40 hr "D" license training class and the
"D" license itself are commonly payroll deducted by the hiring agency.  The cost of the "D' license training course
varies from agency to agency.  Once you have a "D" license, that is yours to keep and take with you to use for any
other security agency you choose to work for as an SO and that's why you have to pay for your own training.  Why
would a company pay for your training and license when you may leave them to work for another company?
Therefore, the bad news is that you have to pay for your own training and licenses, the good news is that they are
yours to keep.

Now we get to the "G" license.  This license requires an additional 28 hours of training on top of the 40 hours you have
already completed for you "D" license.  As far as pay goes, being assigned a post that requires a firearm can increase
your hourly pay from as little as 50 cents
more per hour to $10 more an hour.   It really depends on the agency, the
post, and the length of the assignment. Typically higher paying posts like those required by the BP oil spill are a shorter
duty assignment and often only temporary, but without the "G" license you don't even have a chance to make bank off
another disaster, especially a hurricane that comes and goes quickly leaving a fast short term need for a well paid
armed security presence.

2 year "D' License Fees: $42.00 Finger print and $45.00 License       Total  $87.00     Renewal  $45.00
If you allow your license to expire prior to paying the renewal fee you must start the entire application over again include the fee for the finger prints.

2 year "G' License Fees: $42.00 Finger print and $112.00 License     Total  $154.00   Renewal  $112.00
If you allow your license to expire prior to paying the renewal fee you must start the entire application over again include the fee for the finger prints.

Yearly "G" License Re-qualification: Read carefully. This is where most people mess up and have to
take the whole 28 hour class over again!

Your "G" license is valid for two years, but you have to requal with your duty weapon once a year to
maintain the validity of your license.

Example: You must go by the issued date and expiration date on the "G" license, not the completion date
on your 28 hour "G" license training certificate. The "G" license looks like a driver's license.

Let's say you completed your training in December and you finally get your G license in the mail a week
later and the issue date is January 01 2012 and your expiration date is December 31 2013.

So, we now see the license is valid for two years, but sometime/ anytime between JAN 01 2012 and DEC
31 2012 you must mail in a copy of yearly firearms requal that you completed with a K licensed instructor
in that 365 day period.

You also must do it again sometime/anytime in the next 365 day period :JAN 01 2013 - DEC 31 2013
before your two year expiration date. If you miss either of the yearly requals, your license is automatically
expired and you must take and pay for the entire 28 hour course over again and pay the initial license
application fees also. Yes, including paying for your finger prints again even though they haven't
changed!
